The Transatlantic Economy: A $9.5 Trillion Partnership
Submitted by Vistera Partners
AmCham Luxembourg’s Transatlantic Trade and Investment event at Deloitte was the place where business leaders, diplomats, and policymakers joined to get up to date on the EU-US relationship, the world’s most vital economic partnership. Thanks to the John Hopkins University, all people gained an insight in the transatlantic economy in 2025.
The Numbers That Matter
$9.5 trillion in trade and investment flows across the Atlantic. In Luxembourg alone, American firms support 28,600 jobs, while European companies employ 135,000 in the US. This isn’t abstract, it’s real prosperity and shared growth.
Key Takeaways from 2025:
- US trade with Luxembourg has doubled over a decade, now 10% of our total trade
- The US accounts for 20% of Luxembourg’s Foreign Direct Investment ($500 billion in 2023)
- 55% of US corporate earnings come from Europe (versus 20% in Asia-Pacific)
- 48 of 50 US states trade more with Europe than China
What Holds This Partnership Together
Shared Values: As Paul Schonenberg emphasized, this partnership is rooted in democratic principles and market-based systems.
Stability & Predictability: Ambassador Stacey Feinberg stressed the importance of fair, balanced relationships that reduce risk and enable long-term investment.
Regulatory Clarity: Thibaut L’Ortye (American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union (AmCham EU)) highlighted a critical gap: Europe must modernize its regulatory environment. The Mario Draghi report’s recommendations remain largely unimplemented, only 11% has been implemented so far. Priority areas: AI governance, digital clarity, and investment certainty.
Trade Framework: The EU-US Framework Agreement (summer 2025) brought stability despite tariff challenges, opening doors for collaboration in cybersecurity, energy, defense, and innovation.
What Comes Next
Ambassador Nicole Bintner-Bakshian framed it perfectly: “Partnership drives progress, and unity becomes the strongest currency.” Both sides must accelerate regulatory modernization, deepen tech collaboration, and strengthen defense ties.
