On February 21, 2024, Luxembourg signed the U.S.-led Global Net-Zero Government Initiative agreement formalizing the commitment to achieving net-zero emissions from national government operations by no later than 2050. The initiative agreement was signed by Tom Barrett, the U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg, and Serge Wilmes, Luxembourg’s Minister of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity.
At the signing ceremony, students from Luxembourg schools demonstrated the initiative’s lasting impact on future generations by presenting their ideas to enhance cooperation between the United States and Luxembourg in the ongoing battle against the climate crisis.
“Luxembourg signing onto the U.S.-led Global Net Zero Government Initiative marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards a more sustainable future and represents a commitment to safeguarding the future of our planet for all generations. It was essential to include younger generations in the signing ceremony because the active engagement and fervent dedication of young people are crucial in our joint efforts to combat climate change,” said the U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg, Tom Barrett.
Serge Wilmes, Minister of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, also emphasized:
“The Luxembourg government has already set itself the goal of making its public administration carbon neutral. It is therefore with great conviction that we join the United States’ initiative. Governments, as well as local authorities, need to set an example and be a driving force in decarbonizing our societies.”
FOR BACKGROUND:
At the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27), the United States launched the Global Net-Zero Government Initiative, inviting governments to lead by example and achieve net-zero emissions from national government operations by no later than 2050. By joining this initiative, countries are collectively underscoring the critical leadership role governments can play.
By participating in the Global Net-Zero Government Initiative, Luxembourg commits to achieving net-zero emissions from its national government operations by no later than 2050.
