In her speech on the 24th February Vice Pm and Foreign Affairs Minister Sophie Wilmès made a clear statement : Belgium condemns Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. Through its actions, Russia is seriously violating the principles of international law and the commitments agreed within the framework of the OSCE. Together with partners and allies Belgium is in the process of adopting immediate responses that will have massive consequences and severe costs to Russia.
On the 25th February the Council of EU Foreign Ministers formally adopted the second sanctions package against Russia and partly also against Belarus. Minister Wilmès said: “It is a solid package of sanctions that meets our objectives of taking responsibility for this unprovoked, illegal incursion into Ukraine and isolating the regime in Moscow economically.”. A third package of sanctions is being prepared.
Belgium is completely in favor of the tightened sanctions against the regime in Moscow, but also against its allies in Belarus. This shows that Belgium is and will remain very determined not to let Moscow escape the severe consequences.
