PRESS RELEASE

U.S. Releases the 2021 Luxembourg Religious Freedom Report

On June 2, the United States Department of State released the 2021 International Religious Freedom Report. Mandated by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998, the annual International Religious Freedom Report details the status of religious freedom in foreign countries around the world, including in Luxembourg, and describes U.S. actions to support religious freedom worldwide.

U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg, Thomas Barrett said: “Religious freedom, a universal human right, enriches societies and contributes to stronger and more stable nations. Unfortunately, many governments around the world are still failing to live up to their international obligations as they restrict religious belief and practice.  I am grateful to the Luxembourg government for its commitment to working with the United States and other likeminded governments, bilaterally and through international organizations, in confronting religiously motivated discrimination worldwide and promoting religious freedom across the globe. “

Background

The Department of State submits an annual Report to Congress on International Religious Freedom in compliance with section 102(b) of the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 (P.L. 105-292), as amended.

This report, also known as the International Religious Freedom Report, describes the status of religious freedom, government policies violating religious belief and practices of groups, religious denominations and individuals, and U.S. policies promoting religious freedom in nearly every country and territory throughout the world. The report covers the period between January 1 and December 31 of the previous calendar year.

As it has throughout the past 24 years, this annual report provides governments and legislators, human rights advocates, religious communities, and citizens a tool to better understand the religious freedom situation in their own countries and other places around the world.
